Iraq’s Kurdistan region،— The 14th Erbil International Book Fair، scheduled to go on for ten days، began on Wednesday in Iraqi Kurdistan Region’s capital، Erbil، Ekurd Daily reported.

Director of Communications and Prints at the Ministry of Culture and Youth Mohammed Gardi said during a press conference on Tuesday that up to one million titles would be featured in the 14th Erbil International Book Fair.

The fair is launched in cooperation with Al Mada Foundation، he added.

“All the books have been filtered to avoid banned books and those on violence،” he said.

As many as 300 imprints and publishers inside the Kurdistan Region and 21 from abroad will present their books at the fair، which will last for 10 days.

Massoud Barzani، despite holding no formal position in the Kurdistan Regional Government KRG، and being a leader of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) party، initiated the ribbon-cutting ceremony، accompanied by، among others، former Kirkuk Governor Najmaldin Karim.

Need to be mentioned that reporting team of the independent NRT TV has been prevented by KDP security forces from covering the Erbil International Book Fair. The TV reporter Herish Qadir said the security forces prevented them from entering the building where the fair is taking place، while other channels were allowed inside to cover it.

Al Mada chairman Fakhri Kareem said the book fair is part of the ongoing renaissance in the city and the Kurdistan Region.

It seeks to “spread cultural values، exchange of opinions and expertise، and deepen them through participation and interaction،” the Erbil International Book Fair quoted Kareem as saying.

In 2015، the Ministry of Culture in Iraq’s Kurdistan Region said that it has prevented a number of books of Saudis advocates because they are influencing young people and contain extremist ideas pursued by Islamic State group (IS).
