A 7.1 magnitude quake struck on Monday close to the South Sandwich Islands، a British owned group of islands north of Antarctica، Daily Star reported.

Its epicentre was 61km northeast of Bristol Island، a small island composed of several active volcanoes.

The earthquake's depth was 165km، the US Geological Survey (USGS) said.

Initially reported as a magnitude 7.5 quake، the tremors were powerful enough to be felt within a 250km radius on the surface.
Bristol Island is 2،082km (1،294 miles) southeast of the Falkland Islands، a British-owned territory off the coast of South America.
